[Q] Bricked phone during rooting process. What did I do wrong? Is it fixable?

I've made some mistakes in the rooting process and I'd appreciate critique on the process because I'm still unsure as to what I did wrong.

My device is an SM-N910u which is the Exynos version. It's running the latest system update which I believe is Marshmallow.
I followed the instructions here. In short, the key instruction from the guide is that I flashed the "CF-Auto-Root package as PDA".

It's now stuck on the Samsung boot logo with "Recovery is not SEAndroid enforcing" (in ominous red) at the top left of the screen. Unfortunately I realized a bit too late that the guide was dated 2014 - was this my first mistake?

I don't know what it is I did wrong. What is the correct angle at which I should be approaching this:

Did I flash the wrong recovery
it seems like flashing a recovery through ODIN then entering recovery and flashing SuperSU is the standard procedure for rooting Samsung devices. When I flashed "CF-Auto-Root as PDA", did I flash an outdated recovery? What is PDA (or AP)?

(if so, can flashing the Marshmallow recovery for my device return it to full working order)?

Is there a root for Marshmallow on this device, or is it TBA, if it all?

(if so, can I flash it over the current thing I flashed?)

If the only way to fix this phone is to factory data reset

Can I pull files from the phone using adb or any other method? Ideally I'd have a backup from recovery which I could copy, but I haven't even reached that step yet.
