Bypass Pattern lock on Samsung Galaxy S6 Active Android Phone

I am trying to use this to bypass a pattern lock on a Samsung Galaxy s6 Active and have been unable to do so. The phone does not have an internal Micro SD slot, so I have tried it with a dual adapter flash drive (micro sd) an On the Go cable to a flash drive, and a micro SD card reader to no avail.

Each of these things shows up on the screen if I am in normal mode, though I can't access them, of course, because it is locked.

However, in Recovery mode, if I select "Apply update from SD card" it says "Couldn't mount / sd card. Installation aborted."

If I select "mount / system" it says "Couldn't mount / sd card. Installation aborted. Mounted system."

What am I doing wrong? Please, if anyone can help me I would be deeply grateful and even happy to pay you.

Is this how you "flash" something?

If neither of these options work, can someone tell me a way to use ADB to bypass the pattern lock? Note that the phone is not "rooted" and "USB debugging" is not enabled unless those are things the phone comes set to as a default out of the box.

I am comfortable using a terminal type interface a little, with specific instructions. I have a Windows 10 machine and a Macbook pro I can do this on. Do I need to run something that simulates a Linux machine?

Any ideas? Please.. so desperate. Thank you so much for your time and consideration.

I really need the data on my phone and can not do a factory reset. Mostly, I need the text messages. Is there a way to get this off the phone another way?
