It's been a big week for Android enthusiasts. Not only did we see the official launch of the Galaxy Note 8, but Google jumped out ahead of Samsung to announce the next version of Android. Even after all of the teasing that has happened over the years, the new version turned out to be Android Oreo. Shortly after the release, the company uploaded the AOSP source code and for many it was off to the races. Individual builders began working on builds for their device and a reader quickly uploaded their screenshot of it running on their Mi 5S Plus.
We've also been seeing some ROM builders working on building Android 8.0 Oreo from source for devices they like to work on for the community. Such as the case with XDA Senior Member vasishath in our very own Xiaomi Mi 3 forum. For anyone else with a Mi 3 or Mi 4 from Xiaomi, you may know of the other work that they have released in the past. They've done unofficial builds of OmniROM, ported MultiROM, and has even built a CAF ROM for the two devices.
It's fair to say that many within the community, us included, are appreciative of the work they've done for enthusiasts with the Mi 3 and Mi 4. Over the past week, they've been working on getting AOSP built for the two Xiaomi devices and now they're up to the 4th revision. Released late last night, the community has reported that most major aspects of the phone are working as expected (such as the camera, WiFi, Bluetooth, sensors, etc.).
There is still some work that needs to be done to bring it up to par with other stable custom ROMs for the device, but this is a great first step for Android Oreo on the Mi 3 and the Mi 4. The developer has even put together an extensive FAQ for those who are looking to learn more about it.
