Xiaomi has been on a roll in India. After a difficult 2015, the Chinese OEM bounced back in 2016 with excellent products such as the Redmi Note 3. In 2017, Xiaomi's growth in the Indian smartphone market rapidly accelerated to the point where it is now the second largest smartphone manufacturer in the country only behind Samsung. Phones like the Redmi Note 4 and the Redmi 4 have proven to be all-time bestsellers, and recently the company launched the Mi A1—its first Android One smartphone. To accelerate its momentum, Xiaomi released the Mi Mix 2 this month—the first Xiaomi flagship to arrive in India after one-and-a-half years.
Despite releasing an Android One device, Xiaomi clearly hasn't stopped working on adapting MIUI to the Indian market. The company announced on Tuesday it would be holding its first MIUI Partnership Day in India on November 7 with the aim to work with developers in the country to further localize the user experience of MIUI. The MIUI Partnership Day will be held from 2 PM to 6 PM IST at The Leela Ambience in Gurugram, Haryana. Developers interested in attending are invited to register themselves on the company's dedicated page for the event.
In an emailed statement to NDTV in which it announced the MIUI Partnership Day, Xiaomi called the move a "significant step up in its commitment to the local market." According to the company, the event will enable developers to gain and share knowledge about MIUI apart from finding common ground to collaborate with others. Xiaomi stated that the MIUI Partnership Day will cover topics about Xiaomi's Internet services strategy from products and services to monetization and to the full MIUI ecosystem and its investments.
The company added that it has been working to customize MIUI for Indian users ever since it launched its products in the country three years ago. To achieve that aim, it has set up an R&D team in the country and unveiled localized features such as Copy OTP, Dual Apps, Second Space, Smart IRCTC Ticket SMS, and more. These features have proven popular with Indian MIUI users. Xiaomi also noted that MIUI now supports 13 Indic languages. Finally, the company shared that its MIUI mobile operating system now has over 280 million users across 142 countries and regions.
While Xiaomi may be slow to update its phones to newer versions of Android, it has been diligent when it comes to updating phones to the latest version of MIUI. The global version of MIUI 9 will be released later this year for a vast portfolio of Xiaomi phones. We are definitely interested in seeing how the MIUI Partnership Day will help MIUI overtake stock Android as the most used variant of Android for Indian consumers.
