Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+ Fast Wireless Charger Leaks from Official User Manual

Less than two weeks remain before the official launch of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. We know that the phones will be incremental upgrades over their predecessors, and the official event invite from Samsung states that the camera upgrades will be emphasized with the new phones. We have seen plenty of official renders and leaked specifications including leaked battery capacities. Just recently, we saw the leak of official cases for the devices, including the new "Hyperknit" case.

Now, a leaked user manual shows off Samsung's new fast wireless charger (see: feature image). The manual shows the Samsung Fast Wireless Charger EP-N5100, which will be the official fast wireless charger for the devices. Samsung adopted wireless charging with the Galaxy S6 back in 2015, and even though some Android smartphone vendors have dropped wireless charging since then, the company has kept the technology with each new generation of flagship phones. Samsung was even the first major company to incorporate wireless fast charging. Furthermore, its phones support both major wireless charging standards: Qi and PMA.

The wired fast charger for the Galaxy S8 uses Samsung Adaptive Fast Charge, which is based on Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 and not newer standards like Quick Charge 3.0. However, the wired fast charger still manages to be faster than the official fast wireless charger, because of its higher power output.

According to WinFuture, the Fast Wireless Charger EP-N5100 for the Galaxy S9 will be slightly different from the Galaxy S8's fast wireless charger. Overall, it will be slightly thinner and flatter. However, the basic form factor remains the same, and thus, users can continue to fold the device using a sliding mechanism. Moreover, Samsung continues to use the Qi standard for its fast wireless charger.

However, the design of the new charger is slightly different. On the technical side, only two charging coils are inserted in the device, instead of the three that were inserted in its predecessor. The charging coils are stacked on top of each other so that they can charge a smartphone in different positions. Just like the previous charger, only one of the two coils can be used for the charging process.

The Samsung Fast Wireless Charger EP-N5100 supports 9V/2A, 9V/1.67A and 12V/2.1A charging. However, WinFuture found FCC documents  that reveal that the output power of the charger is below 15W even in 9V operation. This is the same as the device's predecessor, the EP-PG950, hence the new charger will not charge Samsung's new phones faster. Instead, it will take around two hours for them to be fully charged.

There is also an integrated fan on the new charger to ensure active cooling. The new charger will be available in black and white colors, and according to WinFuture, it probably will cost around 75 euro ($92).
