Hey guys. Since this is my first thread, any help/instructions would be welcomed.
While messing around on my Nexus 5x I got a notification from Google Connectivity services telling me if I wanted my phone to auto-connect to open wifi hotspots automatically through a VPN(Virtual Private Network). If you don't know, a VPN sends your data encrypted through a Wi-Fi network. The data is then unencrypted by the VPN server, and is sent to the requested location. This is useful if you want to use an open network but don't want people to be able to spy on your browsing. After exploring a little, I found out how to set this up. I apologize for not being able to insert links into the post due to lack of 10 posts.
Requirements
Step 1: Enable unknown sources
If you already have enabled this feature, you can skip this step
To enable installation from unknown sources, open the settings app. Navigate to security, and enable unknown sources.
After you install the Google Connectivity Services APK, you can disable this(optional)
Step 2: install connectivity services
Download the latest Google Connectivity Services APK
Once the download is finished, install the APK
You can now disabled unknown sources if you desire
Step 4: install activity launcher
Install activity launcher from the play store
Step 5: Create VPN
to create the Google VPN, go to activity launcher. Change from viewing recent activities to all activities. Tap on Google Connectivity Services, and select Wi-Fi assistant. When the dialog pops up, tap OK.
Step 6: Celebrate!
Congrats, you should now have a WiFi Assistant VPN that you can connect to if you want. You can uninstall activity launcher if you want to.
Please let me know how this post is. I would love some constructive criticism.
Thanks
