Samsung Galaxy J3 320 SM-J320F

Hello,

I have this phone.

I did not even intend to hack it in any way beyond trying a custom launcher or two but here comes the issue - it has hardware buttons.

Hardware buttons are awkward to operate in some phone positions, don't rotate with the display, are hard to read under low light conditions, and generally suck.

To enable software buttons the only thing needed is to edit a system file. So you need root.

I tried a few random root programs but neither works.

Apparently there is this Odin utility (eg here). It can flash rom into the phone but not perform a backup, unfortunately. The official roms listed there do not have my localization but some other random web has. There is no official source for official rom. If you are lucky you can presumably extract it from a temp file while Kies is flashing it - but only the update if there is one - not the original rom.

The USB drivers can be downloaded as part of Kies or separately from Samsung. At least the adb part works quite well.

There are sites that prowide CWM for J3 (eg here) but some mention that the SoC is Snapdragon while some news sites mention Spreadtrum. The linked site does not say what for SoC are the recovery images. There does not seem to be reliable way to recover in the case the images are bad.

Anybody has some experience with these phones?
